| Thomas Kirby came to
Abilene as a bank cashier and founded the Kirby
bank in 1878. He built this beautiful
Victorian home in 1885 for his wife and daughter
on what was then known as Grand Avenue.
Kirby also owned large tracts of land throughout
the county and was responsible for building Mount
St. Joseph's Academy, an orphanage. |

Nine years after Mr.
Kirby's death in 1905, Mrs. Kirby sold the home
to the Abilene Commercial Club. During the
next 72 years the home underwent many changes,
including being utilized as apartments. In
1986, Terry and Jerry Tietjens purchased the
structure with the intention of using the home
for a fine dining establishment. After much
research, an eleven month restoration began and
the home was returned to the grand structure it
was in 1885. |
| The restaurant opened for
business in 1987 serving an American Traditional
Midwestern fare of steak, seafood, chicken and
pork. Daily specials, wine and spirits and
specialty coffees are available for your dining
pleasure.

The house has passed
through several hands since Mr. Tietjens sold it
in 1996. The present owner, Vangie Henry,
purchased the house in January 1999. Mrs.
Henry and her staff invite you to enjoy lunch or
dinner in the elegant but casual atmosphere of
the Kirby House.
